TheraPets of Indiana is a non-profit corporation formed to provide animal-assisted therapy and activities in hospitals, nursing homes, school and home settings.
Currently, TheraPets is most active with St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, where the dogs are on-call 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Visitations are done in a way that increases emotional well being, promotes healing and improves the quality of life for patients as well as the staff that cares for them.
Pet visits are comforting, bringing unconditional love and a fun-filled encounter that patients can look forward to. And it’s a known fact that animal-assisted therapy can significantly reduce pain, anxiety, depression and fatigue in people with a range of health problems from chronic heart failure to cancer treatment, post-traumatic stress syndrome and more.
In repeated surveys, both patients and staff have expressed a strong desire that pet therapy programs continue and that the number of visits be expanded – a testament to the program’s benefits.
